Why this course?

Crucially, the program uses classic screenwriting structure as a narrative compass. Rather than passive lectures, every film is paired with a tailored interactive viewing guide.

• There are two types of sessions, one has 3 films over 4 weeks and one has 6 films, over 8 weeks, and each session has its own specific cinematic tale to tell.
• Viewing guides prompt you to track structural milestones, isolate the central dynamic question, and pinpoint exact act transitions.
• Each guide highlights foundational techniques, drawing explicit attention to directorial choices in blocking, sets, lighting, and more.
• Classroom discussion centers on active note-comparing and structural breakdown.
• There is a 12-student cap per session. This is a film seminar, not a lecture.
• Classes will run 90 minutes and will be available in person when possible, with sessions also available via Zoom.

The course examines visual language in depth, exploring how studio directives to shoot in black-and-white versus color dictated technical choices on set. You will see how these mandates altered lighting, set design, wardrobe, makeup, and spatial blocking - and how those same fundamentals translate when working in color.

The goal is to teach the dual language of script and screen, recognize how cinematic elements converge, and understand the deliberate technical choices that transform a sequence of images into art.
